One of the traditions I recall from my own family, years ago, was that everybody had an American flag and displayed it in front of the house on certain days -- Flag Day, Memorial Day, Veterans Day, and especially of course, Independence Day, aka The Fourth of July.
We still do that now (see above), but I don't see evidence that a lot of people do anymore. Too bad. It's a nice tradition, and meaningful in a low-key way.
