According to some reports, the Belgian beer barons who bought Anheuser-Busch a while back are pushing to make baseball's annual seasonal Opening Day a (U.S.) national holiday, with the support of Major League Baseball and some other fringe groups.
Get out! Seriously? Tell me please this is just a bad joke. It's ridiculous. Need I say more?
No, I didn't think so. But I will anyway. I imagine this is more an advertising gimmick than anything. It will sell more beer. (Hint to brewers and teams: If you want to sell more beer, drop the ridiculous prices at the ball parks.)
It may also be intended to help bolster attendance, and reinforce baseball's claim as "the national pastime." Too late! They may hang onto the slogan, but the reality is very different.
